Everton will continue their pursuit of West Brom winger Tom Fellows this summer, as David Moyes looks to beef up his squad.

Fellows has lit up the Championship in a Baggies shirt – particularly during the opening few months of the season – and has therefore attracted the attention of Premier League sides including the Toffees.

Plenty of discourse surrounded Fellows in the winter window, with Everton supposedly launching an unsuccessful £10million bid (Alan Nixon via Patreon, 3 February) for the England youth international who remains on their radar, though this report was played down.

Everton could stump up £20m for Fellows in risky deal

Everton are understood to be planning a bid which could reach £20million for Fellows this summer (Darren Witcoop, 16 February) – one which West Brom would be stubborn to turn down despite his high ceiling of potential.

Fellows has led the Championship assist chart for the majority of the season, though on 11 assists has now been caught up by Middlesbrough’s highly-rated star Finn Azaz.

MORE TOFFEES STORIES

The 21-year-old was thought to be keen to leave his boyhood side at The Hawthorns to join Everton in January, but PSR constraints and the Baggies’ reluctance to sanction a deal quickly extinguished any hope.

For the same reasons, Everton could be taking a plunge by offering up to £20million for Fellows, who is yet to make an appearance in the Premier League.

This transfer in particular, should it take place this summer, could provide the litmus test as to how ambitious Everton are under the Friedkins, or whether it was a naive move too soon.

Friedkin regime desperate to show ambition

Fellows is an excellent performer in the Championship, but many of his ilk have fallen by the wayside in the Premier League down the years and ended up in relegated sides full of players too good for the EFL.

The gulf is becoming increasingly wider between the two top tiers, illustrated by the high likelihood that for the second season running, the three promoted sides into the top flight will be heading straight back whence they came.

The canvas is being painted for a bright future at Everton, and the kind of calibre of signing they can attract in years to come will depend on the performances of the players who are in David Moyes‘ squad currently, and those who arrive within the next 12 months.

Fellows may just be one of them, and that’s a lot of subconscious pressure for a talented young starlet to have on his shoulders.

Under Moyes, however, he may just have the platform to shine and further down the line we could all be discussing what an incredible bargain that £20million fee was.
