Report: Brazilian gem is “close to Liverpool” transfer - could cost around £38m

Liverpool are reportedly on the verge of securing a deal for Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes, beating Manchester United in the race for the highly-rated Brazilian.

According to Gazeta do Urubu, via The People’s Person, Liverpool have emerged as the “main interested party” in signing Gomes, with talks advancing towards a potential summer transfer.

The 24-year-old has been one of Wolves’ standout performers this season, attracting interest from several top European clubs, including United and multiple Serie A sides.

Liverpool looking to bolster midfield options

Despite already revamping their midfield last summer with the arrivals of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, and Wataru Endo, Liverpool are keen to add further depth.

Gomes’ tenacity, defensive ability, and ball-winning skills make him an ideal candidate to strengthen Arne Slot’s squad as they prepare for the 2025/26 season.

With Manchester United also in the hunt for a new midfielder – particularly with Christian Eriksen expected to leave and Casemiro’s future uncertain – Liverpool have moved quickly to position themselves ahead in the race for Gomes’ signature.

Wolves set firm price for Gomes

Reports indicate that Wolves value Gomes at around €38 million (£32.5m), with Brazilian club Flamengo entitled to 14% of any transfer fee due to a sell-on clause in his contract.

The Midlands club is fully aware of the player’s growing value and will only accept offers that meet their financial expectations.

Having already demonstrated his ability to compete at the highest level in the Premier League, Gomes could be an astute signing for Liverpool, offering an aggressive, high-energy presence in midfield.

His ability to break up play and provide defensive cover could prove crucial, especially with Wataru Endo turning 32 next season.

A smart move for Liverpool?

With Manchester United lurking, Liverpool may need to move swiftly to finalise the deal and avoid a transfer battle with their rivals.

Given his proven quality in the Premier League and the pressing need to reinforce the squad, securing Gomes could be another statement signing as Liverpool prepare for a crucial summer window.
