Manchester City vs Chelsea: Part Two

Manchester City and Chelsea met in the Women’s Champions League quarter-final for their second fixture out of four. The home team helped Chelsea to their first defeat of the season. The first half was rather uneventful, but the teams made up for it in the second. Vivianne Miedema opened the scoring after coming off the bench and doubled City’s lead deep in the second half. Bright start for Manchester City

The first few chances in the game were for Manchester City. Kerolin fired an early shot and Jill Roord was played through the defence to test Hannah Hampton. Chelsea struggled to gain control in the first ten minutes, but when they managed to push forward, they proved dangerous.

Despite the bright start, the first 25 minutes were rather uneventful. Slowly, Chelsea took over in terms of possession. The Blues could not quite connect it up top and had to defend against multiple good spells from City.

Goalless at halftime

Both sides having their share of good moments in the first half but couldn’t find the back of the net. Manchester City looked much sharper than they had in the Women’s League Cup Final, but Chelsea managed to stay solid defensively.

Second Half: Who will take the lead?

Manchester City brought on Vivianne Miedema for Murphy and Chelsea added Wieke Kaptein for Macario. Within the first four minutes Lauren James had a shot on target and Casparij fired a low shot towards goal but it went far wide. Both teams struggled to break through in the final third, with chances coming and going but nothing finding the back of the net.

Trying to solve the puzzle

Manchester City regained some of the momentum with Miedema on the pitch. She and Kerolin combined well to trouble the Chelsea defense. The Dutch international finally opens the scoring on the one-hour mark.

Fowler sent in a cross, Hannah Hampton stopped Alexandria’s initial header but it landed perfectly for Miedema, who was unmarked in the box. She slotted the rebound home, giving City a 1-0 lead.

Flag goes up as Ramírez finds the back of the net

Chelsea finally found a way through to Ramírez in the final 20 minutes of the game. The Colombian international was clearly off side but it showed that The Blues were getting closer to the equaliser. Right after, Ramírez was subbed off by Bompastor for Hamano.

Ten more minutes to go

Chelsea should have had the equaliser when Rytting Kaneryd rattled the crossbar with her effort from close range. The next chance fell to Wieke Kaptein, but Yamashita blocked her effort.

Chelsea headed for their first defeat this season as Miedema doubled City’s lead, once again with great work from Kerolin, who found Miedema in the box. The goalscorer turned away from Björn and sent her shot to the far corner, out of Hampton’s reach.

The referee blew the whistle after five minutes of stoppage time: Manchester City won 2-0 in the first leg of the Women’s Champions League quarter-final.
