Foreign Minister of Kyrgyzstan meets with UN High Commissioner for Human Rights

AKIPRESS.COM - Foreign Minister Jeenbek Kulubayev met with UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk during his visit to Kyrgyzstan.

The Minister noted the organization's contribution to the development of democratic institutions in the country, the Foreign Ministry reported.

Kulubayev noted that Kyrgyzstan became a member of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the third time, which indicates the recognition of the country's achievements in this area by the international community.

The Foreign Minister emphasized Kyrgyzstan's participation in the work of the HRC, citing as an example the resolution "Informing the Human Rights Council on the program of human rights advisers", initiated by Kyrgyzstan and adopted at the 56th session of the UNHRC in 2024. This resolution helps small countries develop their potential in the field of human rights.

The Minister also said that today Kyrgyzstan is working to humanize criminal legislation, reform the judicial and law enforcement systems, and effectively implement social programs, including those related to women and children.

The High Commissioner noted Kyrgyzstan's leadership in the field of human rights in the region and the importance of promoting freedom of speech and strengthening civil society for the development of democracy. Türk assured that OHCHR will continue to support Kyrgyzstan in matters of the rule of law and the protection of human rights.

The parties agreed to continue cooperation to strengthen the capacity of state bodies of Kyrgyzstan in the field of human rights protection.
