The number of teams in the Aaron Rodgers sweepstakes is continuing to dwindle, as the Minnesota Vikings became the latest team to bow out of the running on Wednesday morning. One team left is the Pittsburgh Steelers, and their interest in Rodgers recently received a big update.
While the Vikings interest in Rodgers was murky, they were viewed as his preferred landing spot given the amount of weapons they have on their offense. However, it looks like Minnesota is intent on turning things over to J.J. McCarthy, who was the 10th overall pick of the 2024 NFL draft.
"The Vikings have rejected multiple trade calls on J.J. McCarthy, telling other teams they're moving forward with him as their quarterback, sources say. The team plans to add a veteran. But they're not pursuing Aaron Rodgers at this time. McCarthy now enters the offseason as QB1." Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported.
That leaves the Steelers and the New York Giants as the two teams left who have expressed interest in Rodgers this offseason. While the Giants could end up adding another lower-level veteran quarterback, Pittsburgh is perfectly content waiting however long it takes for Rodgers to make his decision.
"Sources have indicated that the Pittsburgh Steelers are fine waiting for Rodgers to make a decision - on whether he's ultimately playing in 2025, and if so, where - and money has not been an issue," Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports reported.
It's worth noting that the Steelers already signed Mason Rudolph to a two-year, $8 million in free agency, and they could still reunite with Russell Wilson, who started 11 games for them last season.
Rodgers started all 17 games for the New York Jets in 2024, throwing for 3,897 yards and 28 touchdowns. The Jets struggled as a whole, though, posting just a 5-12 record, leading to his release ahead of free agency.
