The Athletic has provided an update on the fitness of Ryan Gravenberch after the midfielder was forced to leave the national team training camp early.

Liverpool fans received devastating news on Wednesday night: Gravenberch had left the Netherlands training camp due to injury.

The Dutchman was among 17 first-team stars that have been called up by their national teams during the March international break.

The 22-year-old, alongside Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo, was called up by Ronald Koeman for the Netherlands’ upcoming Nations League double-header against Spain.

However, Gravenberch’s stay with the Oranje squad has been cut short due to an injury he suffered during Liverpool’s 2-1 loss to Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final last Sunday.

The Dutch national team confirmed the news with a statement on their official X account on Wednesday.

“Ryan Gravenberch has left the Oranje’s training camp this evening,” the statement said.

“The midfielder is still suffering from an injury sustained over the weekend that prevents him from playing in the matches against Spain.”

The 22-year-old started the game on Sunday but lasted for 74 minutes before being replaced. It looked like his substitution at the time was tactical. However, it now appears that Arne Slot withdrew him after he picked up an injury.

That did not stop Koeman from calling him up for the upcoming games. However, he has been forced to withdraw from the squad to attend to the injury.

While the nature of the injury is yet to be ascertained, The Athletic has revealed the next steps for Gravenberch after leaving the national team camp.

“Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch will return to the club to be assessed after leaving the Netherlands’ training camp on Wednesday evening,” The Athletic reported.

“The midfielder suffered an injury in the Carabao Cup final, and the decision was taken that he wouldn’t be fit to feature for his country in their two-legged Nations League tie against Spain.”

Liverpool fans and, indeed, Arne Slot will be hoping that the midfielder’s injury is nothing too serious, considering his importance to the team.

The 22-year-old has been one of Liverpool’s most important players this season, playing almost every minute of the Reds’ important games this campaign.

Thankfully, the Reds are not in action until the first week of April when they face Everton in the Merseyside Derby. It will be hoped that the two-weeks break will give him enough time to recover in time to participate in Liverpool’s last nine games of the season.
