Cairo: The number of worshippers, who prayed in the Prophet's Mosque, Islam's second holiest site in the Saudi city of Medina, during the first half of the current Ramadan surpassed 14 million, official figures showed.

Meanwhile, a total of 379,372 permits were issued for male and female visitors to Al Rawda Al Sharifa where the tomb of the Prophet's Mohammed Mosque (Peace Be Upon Him) is located.

The Saudi General Authority for Care of the Two Holy Mosques added in a report that more than 4.5 million Iftar meals were served during the first half of the month, while the consumption of Zamzam water for drinking reached 3,650 tonnes.

In addition, more than 81,000 litres of disinfectants and sterilization substances were used during the same period.

The Authority noted that the cart transportation in the mosque served more than 250,000 worshippers, while 50,000 wheelchairs were provided for the elderly.

The occupancy rate of the prayer areas reached 93% inside the mosque, and exceeded 80% of the overall capacity of the outer courtyards, while it reached 33% on the roof of the mosque, according to the report.

Authorities in Medina have mobilized all sources to welcome the influx of worshippers and visitors characteristic of the lunar month of Ramadan marked by intense worshipping.

In a step to provide comfortable transportation in Medina, a shuttle bus service operates to the Prophet's Mosque in Ramadan via several routes across the city.

The service entails increasing the number of buses, operating hours, and the stop points.
