Statement from Refugees International:
“Refugees International strongly condemns the Israeli military’s deadly attacks on Gaza on Tuesday that killed over 400 people and wounded many more. New [disturbing statements](https://www.timesofisrael.com/liveblog_entry/amid-renewed-strikes-katz-says-gates-of-hell-will-open-in-gaza-if-hostages-not-released/) by Israel’s Defense Minister on Wednesday underscore that renewed military operations will directly punish the people of Gaza and dramatically increase harm inflicted on civilians. This escalation, combined with the Israeli government’s renewed blockade on all food and aid deliveries into Gaza, risks an imminent humanitarian collapse in the territory. We likewise renew our longstanding condemnation of all sides’ violations of international humanitarian law, including Hamas’ continued holding of hostages, and we call for their immediate and unconditional release. Both parties have failed to uphold their commitments under the ceasefire. This latest violence is evidence that neither side is serious about ending the war—while civilians pay the price.
The humanitarian situation is increasingly precipitous. The bulwarks against widespread famine have collapsed over the past month – Israeli military attacks have resumed, the United States has frozen its aid programs, and Israel has reimposed a blockade on aid imports. International humanitarian law strictly prohibits collective punishment as a tool of war, yet Israeli leaders have openly suggested that starving and attacking civilians is a valid tactic to force ‘genuine talks’ with Hamas.
Whatever the diplomatic and political outcome, two principles must be non-negotiable: civilians must be protected and humanitarian assistance must be facilitated. Cutting off food, medicine, and essential supplies is not a strategy—it is starvation. Israel must allow a steady and sustained flow of aid through all crossings and unimpeded humanitarian access across Gaza.
If this violence continues, the progress made during the ceasefire—including averting famine—will be undone. Gaza cannot afford to wait.”
