Severe floods hit three districts in Johor, 753 evacuated

JOHOR - Heavy rainfall in Johor has led to severe flooding in three districts, forcing the evacuation of over 700 residents.

The Johor Disaster Management Committee reported that a total of 221 families have been relocated to 10 temporary relief centres (PPS) across Kulai, Pontian, and Johor Bahru.

“As of 4am on Thursday (March 20), a total of 753 individuals have been rescued,” said the committee in a statement.

“The district with the highest number of victims is Johor Bahru, with 461 people evacuated, followed by Kulai with 235 people and Pontian with 57 people.”

Authorities have warned that the number of flood victims may increase as more reports are being updated from affected areas.

Meanwhile, Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi has urged residents to stay alert and follow official directives as continuous heavy rainfall is expected to persist until March 21.

“I have received a report from the Johor Meteorological Department (MET Johor) stating that continuous heavy rain is expected until Friday (March 21),” he said.

“An orange alert warning has been issued for severe rainfall in Kluang, Mersing, Pontian, Kulai, Kota Tinggi, and Johor Bahru. Meanwhile, a yellow alert for continuous rainfall has been issued for Tangkak, Segamat, Muar, and Batu Pahat.”

He added: “I urge all Johoreans to remain vigilant and adhere to any directives from the authorities while prioritising their own safety and that of their families.”

The public is advised to stay updated through official sources and take necessary precautions, particularly in flood-prone areas. THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
