Cavaliers host graphic design clinic for local students

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - Cleveland teenagers got a glimpse into the life of an NBA graphic design artist, and will now see their hard work come to fruition this weekend.

The Cavaliers partnered with the Cudell Recreation Center to host a four-week graphic design clinic, as part of the Cavs for All the Land program.

Three members of the Cavs graphic design team worked with ten students ages 14-17, and taught them the fundamentals of graphic design.

During the program the students worked on designing a warm-up shirt for the G League Cleveland Charge, that they will wear in their final home game on Sunday, March 23 against the College Park Skyhawks.

“This is the most important thing that we do,” Cavs’ Executive Vice President and Chief Impact and Equity Officer, Kevin Clayton said. “As great as we are on the court, it does not touch what we want to do off the court.”

Ninth grader Teja Smith knew nothing about graphic design before she started in the program, and through the course has learned the importance of trying something new.

“I’m going to be really excited to see it, I hope they like it,” Smith said.

The students will be recognized at the Charge’s game on Sunday, and will get to take home their custom-designed shirts.

“They get firsthand exposure really early before they’ve chosen a career, which is invaluable,” Clayton said.
