The State of Qatar hosted a trilateral meeting on Tuesday as part of efforts to de-escalate the situation in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The meeting brought together the Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, President Paul Kagame of the Republic of Rwanda, and President Felix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, according to a statement by the Qatari foreign ministry.
The heads of state welcomed the progress made in the Luanda and Nairobi processes, as well as the joint summit of the East African Community and the Southern African Development Community held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, on 8 February, 2025.
The heads of state affirmed the commitment of all parties to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, as agreed upon at the aforementioned summit.
The heads of state agreed on the need to continue the discussions initiated in Doha to build a solid foundation for achieving sustainable peace, as outlined in the merged Luanda and Nairobi processes.
In a related context, the President of Rwanda and the President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo expressed their gratitude to the State of Qatar and Sheikh Tamim “for convening this meeting and for their positive role in building confidence and achieving a secure and stable future for the Democratic Republic of the Congo and its territory.”
Doha resumed its diplomatic activity between the two African countries amid the crisis between them, following recent developments in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the attack launched by the M23, fully supported by Rwanda, on the city of Goma in eastern Congo.
Qatar acted as a mediator between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo at the request of both parties and at the invitation of the African Union.
Earlier, the official spokesperson for the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Majed Al-Ansari, stated that his country is mediating in 10 international conflicts.
