“I don’t doubt”- Former scout says Tottenham star would be keen to join Real Madrid if they…

Tottenham could pressurise Cristian Romero to either sign a new contract or get sold this summer amid Real Madrid links

There has been a lot of speculation surrounding the future of Cristian Romero at Tottenham Hotspur.

The Argentina international’s contract at White Hart Lane does not run out until the summer of 2027 but an exit cannot be ruled out. The centre-back has missed significant chunks of the campaign due to a combination of hamstring and quad problems. Overall, he has missed 27 games for Spurs, limiting him to only 12 Premier League appearances this season.

Despite his injury concerns, Cristian Romero remains a crucial cog in the Tottenham side under Ange Postecoglou and the club regards him very highly. Spurs are understood to be keen on tying the Argentine to a new contract even though he’s got two more years left on his existing contract.

It is reported that the 26-year-old is not convinced to extend his stay at N17. As a result, the Hotspur Way chiefs are expected to pressurise Romero to sign a contract extension, and if he doesn’t agree to it, they will sell him when the transfer window reopens for business in the summer and invest the funds on a new centre-back.

Does Guehi approach mean the end of Romero at Tottenham?

Cristian Romero has been on Real Madrid’s radar

The South American has been on the radar of Real Madrid for a long time now. The La Liga giants have drawn up a defensive shortlist which includes the Tottenham star. Ex-scout Mick Brown says Romero will depart Spurs should Real Madrid come calling for his signature this summer, as Carlo Ancelotti aims to revamp his defensive unit.

“I hear Real Madrid have been looking at Cristian Romero,” Mick Brown exclusively told Football Insider.

“To be honest, he never gives me the impression of stability, he’s always liable to make a bad decision or do something silly and cost you.

“I don’t think that’s what Real Madrid need at the moment. They certainly want to sign a centre-back and he’s on their list, but there are other targets too. The injuries they’ve had this season have forced them to look at a number of options and they’ve been working on finding the right players.

“I don’t doubt if Romero is given the chance to join Real Madrid, he’ll want to go. But they need stability there which will allow them to get the best out of the superstars they’ve got in the final third of the pitch. I expect they’ll look elsewhere, but they’ll need to decide on a top target because when Real Madrid set their sights on someone, they usually get him.”

Ange Postecoglou has missed Cristian Romero’s services for a significant period this season

Brown implies that Romero is not Madrid’s No.1 defensive target. This is because he finds the 2022 World Cup winner to be unreliable and error-prone—as evidenced by his performances for Tottenham in the last two years. Add that to his patchy injury record which makes him somewhat of a liability—someone Madrid will not want to have in their defensive ranks next season.

But should Los Blancos think the ex-Atalanta man fits their criteria perfectly and make a move, it is certain that he will push for an exit from Tottenham. And Romero’s desire to leave Tottenham will entirely be understandable given the kind of season the Lilywhites have endured and how far behind they find themselves from the top six.

At 26, the Argentinean international is at the peak of his powers and a move to Real Madrid—the most successful club in world football—offers a chance to match his ambition.
