‘Brilliant’ – Crystal Palace loan man hailed by EFL coach after impressive spell

AFC Wimbledon goalkeeping coach Ashley Bayes has said Crystal Palace loanee Owen Goodman has been ‘brilliant’ since his move.

AFC Wimbledon landed the stopper on a temporary basis last summer. They are currently sat in 3rd place in the League Two table as they eye promotion to League One.

Goodman, 21, has made the number one spot his own with the Dons this season. He has made 42 appearances in all competitions and has kept 19 clean sheets.

Bayes has said, as per the Eagles’ official club website: “He’s been brilliant since coming in the door, he’s learning every day. He’s getting better every day with the more minutes he’s playing. Obviously, he’s into his second loan and I’m really enjoying developing him, not only as a goalkeeper, but also as a person, as a man.

“Owen came in two weeks into our pre-season, so it took him a few weeks to get used to everything. As we’ve gone along, I feel like we’ve brought out his personality in him and he’s now found himself in the group with the players, which is really pleasing from a coaching point of view.”

AFC Wimbledon brought in Goodman last year to boost their goalkeeping department. They released Nik Tzanev and saw Alex Bass return to Sunderland.

Crystal Palace gave him the green light to head out the exit door again to get some more experience.

He is due to return to Selhurst Park later this year and the Eagles have a big decision to make on what to do with him next.

Goodman spent the last campaign on loan at Colchester United and played 40 matches for the U’s altogether, 38 of which came in the league.

He has been on the books at Crystal Palace for his whole career to date and has risen up through their academy ranks.

The ‘keeper has been a regular for the Eagles at various youth levels over recent years and was handed his first professional contract back in July 2021 when he was just 17.

The England youth international, who has also represented Canada in the past, is yet to play for the London club’s first-team but was on the bench under their former manager Roy Hodgson a couple of times last year.

Goodman has caught the eye at AFC Wimbledon and Crystal Palace will be keeping tabs on his progress.

The Dons are back in action this weekend at home to Barrow following their away win at Carlisle United.
