Report: Paul Mitchell given exciting Newcastle United ‘mission’ as PIF set out fresh transfer…

Paul Mitchell is set for a very busy summer as Newcastle United’s sporting director.

When the summer transfer window arrives, Paul Mitchell will have been at Newcastle United for a year.

Two transfer windows have passed without making a major signing, with PSR limiting his ability flex his recruitment muscles.

But that should change this summer. The Magpies have much more PSR wiggle room thanks to the sales of Miguel Almiron and Lloyd Kelly, with Newcastle aiming for three signings.

The plan will be to improve Eddie Howe’s squad, but Mitchell also has another ambition.

Paul Mitchell’s summer transfer window ‘mission’

According to the Telegraph, Newcastle United sporting director Paul Mitchell is intending to lower the average age of the Magpies’ current squad.

The Telegraph describe this as Mitchell’s ‘mission’, with the former Monaco chief set to target young talent when the summer transfer window opens – either from the United Kingdom or further afield.

Eddie Howe does have a slightly ageing squad in some departments, so new faces are required to bring the average age down. Kieran Trippier, Fabian Schar and Dan Burn started the Carabao Cup final, and they have a combined age of 99.

Elsewhere, Callum Wilson is 33-years-old and Martin Dubravka is 36-years-old.

While experience is vital, the time is coming for Newcastle United to evolve. PIF want Newcastle to become elite and enjoy sustained success. That will not be possible without lowering the average age of the squad.

Newcastle United will consider marquee signing

Mitchell will aim to sign young players who can blossom into superstars thanks to Eddie Howe’s coaching.

That is the blueprint that the Magpies must follow in the era of PSR. It is simply not possible for them to target multiple readymade stars who can walk into the Newcastle United starting XI.

However, with Newcastle possibly competing in the Champions League next season, they could do with a marquee addition to seriously enhance Howe’s squad.

The Telegraph add that Newcastle will consider signing a marquee name who has Premier League experience.

Throughout his tenure on Tyneside, Howe has had a preference for talent with Premier League experience. It has allowed players to have an immediate impact in black and white.

That would be the hope again this summer, with Newcastle looking to sign a right-sided centre-back, a right winger and a forward.

It remains to be seen what position Newcastle United would want their marquee signing to play in.
