‘One of my footballing idols’ – Blackburn Rovers player heaps praise on Crystal Palace ace

Blackburn Rovers youngster Isaac Dunn has said Adam Wharton is one of his ‘footballing idols’.

Blackburn Rovers sold the England international to Crystal Palace in February last year. He has since made the step up to the Premier League with ease since cutting ties with Rovers.

Dunn, 16, is looking to follow in the footsteps of Wharton over the coming years. His father, David, had two separate spells as a player at Ewood Park.

The teenager has said, as per the official club website: “My journey at Rovers started at Under-6s and I’ve been here ever since. At Under-8s, I was told that I was going to play down a level, but I think that was the best thing that happened to me as I wasn’t physically ready for my own age group.

“At Under-12s, I made the switch back to my own age group and I’ve kicked on ever since. Recently, it’s been good being a scholar and pushing onto the first-team. Ever since I’ve been here, the coaches and the staff all want the best for you.

“The amount of players who have come through the Academy is incredible. Adam Wharton’s one of them and is one of my footballing idols.”

The prospect will be looking to break into their first-team down the line.

Dunn has made the bench for Rovers on three occasions this season against Middlesbrough, Oxford United and Preston North End.

As for Wharton, he also progressed up through Blackburn Rovers’ ranks and played 51 matches altogether, finding the net on four occasions.

His performances in the second tier alerted the attention of Crystal Palace and they moved to snap him up last year.

The Blackburn-born man, who has played once for the Three Lions, has made 33 appearances in all competitions for the Eagles and it wouldn’t be a surprise if they faced a battle to keep hold of him in the future.

Blackburn Rovers have been in poor form recently and if their campaign starts to fizzle out, that could increase Dunn’s chances of making his debut.

They turned to former Barnsley, West Brom and Watford man Valerien Ismael as their replacement for John Eustace.
