Liverpool have released a statement after Ryan Gravenberch pulled out of the Netherlands squad. The midfielder had joined up with his national team-mates, including fellow Reds Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo, for the UEFA Nations League matches against Spain.

But the Netherlands confirmed on Wednesday night that Gravenberch would play no part in the two-legged quarter-final after sustaining an injury in Liverpool's Carabao Cup final defeat to Newcastle United on Sunday.

Taking to X, the Netherlands' official account said: "Ryan Gravenberch has left the Oranje's training camp this evening.

"The midfielder is still suffering from an injury sustained over the weekend that prevents him from playing in the matches against Spain. Take care, Ryan!"

Now the Reds have shed further light on what they call a 'fitness issue'.

The club statement reads: "Ryan Gravenberch has departed the Netherlands camp and will not be involved in their fixtures this week.

"The Liverpool midfielder had linked up with his country, alongside Cody Gakpo and Virgil van Dijk, for a UEFA Nations League double-header versus Spain on Thursday and Sunday.

"However, the Dutch announced on Wednesday evening that Gravenberch has now withdrawn from duty due to a fitness issue.

"The 22-year-old will be assessed upon his return to Merseyside, with the Reds back in action when they host Everton in the Premier League on April 2."

The Wembley loss to Newcastle ended a difficult week for Arne Slot's side, who five days earlier exited the Champions League at the last-16 stage after suffering a penalty shoot-out defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

Trent Alexander-Arnold came off in that match and has not linked up with the England squad as a result. But reports have suggested the right-back could return before the end of April.

Harvey Elliott was hurt after a crude challenge by Magpies midfielder Joelinton in Sunday's Carabao Cup final but the midfielder has been pictured training with England Under-21s this week.

Conor Bradley, Joe Gomez and Tyler Morton all remain sidelined for Liverpool, who boast a 12-point lead at the top of the Premier League ahead of their return to action against Merseyside rivals Everton at Anfield.
