Michael Owen once explained why he really left Liverpool for Madrid and Alexander-Arnold could be feeling the same

The future of Trent Alexander-Arnold remains up in the air.

The Liverpool full-back is out of contract at the end of the season and there have been no signs of a deal getting signed.

Real Madrid are showing strong interest in Alexander-Arnold and are ready to sign the England international as a free agent ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

Back in December, Real Madrid tested the waters with a cheeky bid for Alexander-Arnold, a sign Michael Owen did not like as he knew the La Liga club were making their intentions clear.

The former Liverpool striker knows exactly what the lure of Los Blancos feels like and his thoughts when the Spanish giants made a move for him may be how Alexander-Arnold is feeling at present.

Michael Owen did not want to leave Liverpool for Real Madrid

Owen left Liverpool for Real Madrid during the summer of 2004 with the former England striker being a key player for the Reds at the time having scored 19 goals the season before.

The Englishman came through the Liverpool academy and had a lot of affection for the Merseyside club, however, when Real Madrid came calling, Owen could not say no.

Speaking to Sky Sports years later, Owen revealed that he did not want to leave Liverpool at the time, but felt he would regret not taking the opportunity to play in Spain.

“When I left Liverpool to go to Real Madrid. I didn’t want to leave Liverpool. I love Liverpool, but Real Madrid,” the former Reds star said. “It was just something that you think to yourself, if I say no, if I don’t go, then it might be something I’ll regret for the rest of my career.

“I almost thought to myself, well, if I don’t like it I can always come back and I left on good terms with the people at Liverpool.”

This may be how Alexander-Arnold is thinking about his current situation as the signs do not look good for the full-back remaining at Anfield.

Trent Alexander-Arnold set for Real Madrid move

The feeling many have at present around Liverpool is that Alexander-Arnold will leave the Reds this summer for Spain as Real Madrid is a great opportunity for the 26-year-old and the switch will be made easier with his friend Jude Bellingham already at the Bernabeu.

Owen is convinced Alexander-Arnold will be playing for Real Madrid next season going off the signs he has already seen and the pundit has stated that if he does come to that decision, no one should hold it over the full-back.

The defender’s exit would be a big blow for Arne Slot has Liverpool missed Alexander-Arnold during the Carabao Cup final and that may be a sign of things to come.

A return may be on the cards for the right-back further down the line and just like Owen, that may be his current thought process. But like the former Reds star, that plan may not work out.
