Jorginho in Brazil as Flamengo negotiations continue

After Arsenal knocked back Flamengo’s January approach for Jorginho, it felt like a summer move to the Brazilian side – just in time for the Club World Cup – was inevitable.

The midfielder is clearly keen, but according to GOAL Brasil (via Sport Witness), there’s a snag: he’d have to forfeit a loyalty bonus if he leaves the Emirates before his contract officially expires on 30 June.

It’s the sort of thing Arsenal could just cover – what’s a couple of weeks in the off-season between friends? – but you can also see why they might try to dodge it. Over to you, Andrea Berta!

The report claims Jorginho is hoping Flamengo will stump up the cash so he doesn’t lose out if he makes the switch during FIFA’s special short-term transfer window (1–10 June), designed exclusively for Club World Cup participants before the tournament kicks off in the US on 14 June.

Earlier this week, the Italy international was spotted touching down in Rio, adding fuel to the fire. Now, it’s just a case of whether they can iron out the final details in time.

Elsewhere, Riccardo Calafiori has been chatting about his experience of English football as his debut season comes to a close. It sounds like he’s enjoying himself, even if he’s having to tussle with Myles Lewis-Skelly for game time.

“It was a childhood dream of mine, and I made it come true. It’s an incredible feeling,” the full-back told a press conference while on international duty.

“I prefer playing at the highest levels; Champions League, Premier League, or with the national team.”

He was also asked if plying his trade in England will help him become a leader in the Azzurri dressing room.

“The Premier League is a unique competition, and it gives you a lot,” he said.

“It won’t be easy, but we have a great group. I focus on the team more than on personal goals.”
