However, the Sunderland-born goalkeeper is true to his roots and grew up not liking the Tyneside club.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Pickford admitted that Newcastle fans do enjoy giving him a hard time about his Sunderland history when he plays at St. James’ Park.

“Obviously, St. James’ Park, the atmosphere towards me is always on another scale, but for me, I think Old Trafford [is his favourite away ground],” the 31-year-old said.

“Like I said, from when I was a kid, watching Champions League matches and the Peter Schmeichel days. I’ve always enjoyed playing there.”

Pickford has now joined the England squad ahead of their World Cup 2026 Qualifiers over the coming days.

Although the goalkeeper may not get a warm reception at St. James’ Park, Pickford shone against West Ham at Goodison Park last weekend, which will earn the praise of Everton fans.

Newcastle United fans have mocked Jordan Pickford previously

He may have been England’s hero in penalty shootouts, but that has not prevented Pickford from being on the receiving end of chants from Newcastle fans.

Just a few years ago, some Newcastle fans snuck inflatable dinosaurs into a game against Everton to mock the Everton goalkeeper.

Pickford saved Anthony Gordon’s penalty earlier this season, and he has had the last laugh on a number of occasions against the Toon.

Although some of the chants are not appropriate to be repeated, the Everton goalkeeper has given Newcastle fans as good as he’s got.

The 31-year-old has also been spotted celebrating Everton goals even more than usual in front of the Newcastle fans.

Ultimately, it is atmospheres like that at Goodison and St. James’ Park which make the Premier League the spectacle it is.
