Google has announced two new additions to Gemini. The first, Canvas, is now available in the Gemini prompt bar on both web and mobile platforms. This tool lets users draft, edit, and refine documents or code directly within Gemini.
Users can upload documents and ask Gemini to perform tasks such as creating a speech from class notes. Users can export their documents to Google Docs for more editing or collaboration.
Canvas also supports coding tasks. It can generate prototype web apps, Python scripts, and HTML. Users can ask Gemini about the code, make changes, and preview results in real time within the platform as modifications are made.
The second addition, Audio Overviews, was first introduced in Google's NotebookLM product and has now been added to Gemini with better functionality, as reported by Ars Technica. This tool generates a conversation between two AI-created personas, similar to a podcast, based on uploaded documents. Users can access this by clicking the "Generate Audio Overview" button above the prompt bar. I was not able to find this option.
Audio Overviews is also integrated with Deep Research, Google's AI-powered internet research tool. Users can now generate Audio Overviews from Deep Research reports.
Both Canvas and Audio Overviews are available globally for all Gemini users, including those using the free version. However, Audio Overviews is currently only available in English. Google says it plans to add more languages in the future.
