West Ham have received a negative response to their contract proposal.

West Ham have been dealt an early summer transfer window blow after submitting a contract offer to one of their targets. The Hammers are likely to undergo a squad overhaul in the summer as Graham Potter looks to put his own stamp on his squad.

Potter has struggled to drum up any momentum during his early says in charge of the Hammers, but the board recognise that he will need players who fit his style for him to get the best results.

The Irons boss will get that opportunity this summer, and it’s reported that he has already decided on one target. That target is Lille midfielder Angel Gomes, who has brought his career to life in France on the back of his Manchester United departure in 2020. Gomes is out of contract this summer, and he is already able to agree a pre-contract with any club outside France.

West Ham have put their best foot forward with an offer of £100,000 per week, according to The Guardian. But it’s now being reported that Gomes has turned down the offer, hoping to get an even better wage this summer, something that is not unusual for players who are available without transfer fees.

That could mean the Irons drop out of the race given they need to make significant changes this summer and all while keeping their wages within the limits of PSR, which could be a tricky task. Tottenham have also been linked with Gomes over recent weeks, reportedly holding conversations with his representatives, while Barcelona are also interested, according to the same Guardian report.

It’s also added that the Hammers are in talks over a possible deal for another out of contract Lille star Jonathan David, but talks have ‘not progressed’ beyond initial conversations at this stage. The Hammers need more up top having struggled with injuries in the position this term. But as far as Gomes is concerned, it looks as though the England international will be out of their price range, at least if they they want to significantly improve a number of other positions this summer.
