Report: Arne Slot ready to go back in for £67m talent Liverpool were 'extremely keen' on last summer

Arne Slot is ready to bring his own players to Liverpool.

The Dutch coach only saw Federico Chiesa added to his squad last summer after Liverpool failed to bring Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi to Anfield which has left the 46-year-old working with the team Jurgen Klopp had all season.

That has worked out for the most part for Slot as Liverpool are closing in on the Premier League title with the Reds currently sitting 12 points ahead of Arsenal with nine games to go.

The lack of spending over the last three transfer windows has left Liverpool with the budget to make some big signings ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

Newcastle’s Alexander Isak is the name every Liverpool fan wants to see at Anfield as the Merseyside club search for a new number nine, however, an old target has now reappeared on the club’s radar.

Liverpool enquire about Xavi Simons

Xavi Simons is a player Liverpool have liked for a long time with journalist Yvonne Gabriel stating last summer that the Reds were “extremely keen on him” as there is a good connection to Slot.

A new report from CaughtOffside has stated that Liverpool are considering a move for the Dutch star again ahead of the new season and have checked on the RB Leipzig star’s availability.

The German club signed Simons for £42m (€50m) in January from PSG but are ready to make a quick profit this summer by placing a £67m (€80m) price tag on the 21-year-old.

There are several other clubs in the race for the midfielder this summer and it will likely depend on other signings if Liverpool get really serious about bringing the RB Leipzig talent to Anfield.

Liverpool cannot afford to spend big money on Xavi Simons

A lot of Liverpool’s transfer business this summer will depend on what happens with the futures of Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold as the trio will require big wages to resign.

Darwin Nunez is also set to leave Liverpool this summer and the Uruguayan’s sale will also bring in a large chunk of cash for the Reds to spend ahead of next season.

Slot requires a new center-back, a left-back, a number six and a striker this summer and adding to all those positions will not be cheap – especially if Isak is the Dutch coach’s top target.

Therefore, spending £67m on Simons cannot be justified as Liverpool do not need a number 10 at present as several stars can play in the position.

A transfer for the Dutch star may become a possibility if Luis Diaz leaves Liverpool as the 21-year-old can play on the left, if not, that money is best spent elsewhere.
