Bill Chisholm is purchasing the Boston Celtics from the Grousbeck family for a record $6.1 billion, making it the most expensive sports franchise sale in North American history.
Bill Chisholm, managing partner at Symphony Technology Group, has agreed to purchase the Boston Celtics from the Grousbeck family in a record-breaking deal valued at $6.1 billion, according to Shams Charania of ESPN.
Boston Celtics / Schedule
This marks the largest sale of a sports franchise in North American history, surpassing the NFL's Washington Commanders, who were sold for $6.05 billion.
As reported by Sportico, Chisholm has agreed to purchase the Celtics in two stages, which aligns with the current ownership's plan. The first payment values the team at $6.1 billion.
The Celtics, fresh off their NBA-record 18th championship last season, had been preparing for this transition since the Grousbeck family announced plans to sell their controlling interest by early 2025.
Wyc Grousbeck, the team's CEO since Boston Basketball Partners L.L.C. acquired the franchise in 2002 for $360 million, confirmed in November that he will remain the team's governor until 2028.
Previously, the most expensive NBA sale was the Phoenix Suns' $4 billion deal with Mat Ishbia in 2022.
