Leeds United have a number of players out on loan this season, one plying his trade abroad while some are competing against the Whites on home soil in the Championship. Meanwhile, one loanee has left permanently.
Sonny Perkins departed the club for good in January when a fee was agreed with Leyton Orient, who held him on loan initially. Others had left a few weeks earlier, with Joe Gelhardt one of those to head out of Elland Road until the summer.
The picture is generally bright for many of those out earning game time. Here, we round up how these players are faring away from Leeds this season.
Joe Gelhardt
Loan club - Hull City
Gelhardt was allowed to leave for a Championship rival in January due to his professional behaviour behind the scenes, despite not playing for Leeds since the first week of October. The 22-year-old scored on his full Hull City debut against Queens Park Rangers and has started all 10 games since.
Gelhardt has enjoyed a fruitful March, netting twice in four league games prior to the international break. Both strikes against Plymouth Argyle and Oxford United came while he was operating as an attacking midfielder.
He has been used in a number of other positions by Tigers boss Ruben Selles, including on both wings and as the main striker. He has played the full 90 minutes on seven occasions, including in five of his last six outings.
Darko Gyabi
Loan club - Plymouth Argyle
Gyabi may be fighting relegation from the Championship with Plymouth but his performances against Premier League opposition have caught the eye. The 21-year-old won the penalty that saw his side come out 1-0 victors over Liverpool in the FA Cup in February amid a cool display in defensive midfield.
He then played more than an hour as the pivot against Manchester City in the next round, coming off with the game locked at 1-1 before the Blues went on to score two goals once he had exited the field. As a midfield pivot, Gyabi’s tally of one goal and two assists in 41 matches for Plymouth is not surprising nor a barometer of his progress.
The youngster has been under the tutelage of three managers, both temporary and permanent, this season and has been a key starter for all of them. His 29 starts in 36 matches gives a better picture of his importance.
Rasmus Kristensen
Loan club - Eintracht Frankfurt
Kristensen is bound for a Leeds exit this summer, with loan club Eintracht Frankfurt keen on his signature. While reports suggesting a deal has been struck are premature, talks are indeed ongoing.
The German club have made good use of Kristensen, who has started 22 of his 23 Bundesliga appearances this campaign. He has played in a variety of positions, mainly at right-back but also at centre-half and at wing-back.
The Dane netted his third goal of the season prior to the international break, scoring in a 3-1 away win at Bochum. Kristensen has overall played 34 games - including nine in the Europa League - for Frankfurt, who currently occupy a Champions League spot in the Bundesliga table.
Sam Greenwood
Loan club - Preston North End
Greenwood has scored seven times in 41 games for Preston North End during his season-long loan, though just one has come since November 23, a run that involves 24 subsequent matches. Of those games, he has started 19.
Usually used as a centre-forward, Greenwood has also been deployed as a supporting striker, a winger and even as a deep-lying midfielder. Amid his frustrating recent form, having also not tallied an assist since late November, things got worse just before the break.
Greenwood received the second red card of his stay in the weekend’s 2-1 win over Portsmouth for two bookable offences. That comes after being dismissed for a two-footed challenge 42 minutes into the Lancashire derby against Burnley in September.
Charlie Crew
Loan club - Doncaster Rovers
Crew might be on for two promotion medals this season, with Doncaster Rovers hunting to elevate out of League Two. The 18-year-old, who is on international duty with Wales Under-19s this break, joined his loan club in January, having made his Leeds debut in November.
The defensive midfielder started his first six games, but has since begun only one of Doncaster’s last six matches, featuring in just two of them. In his eight appearances for the club, he has started seven.
Luca Thomas
Loan club - Halifax Town
Academy hopeful Thomas swapped York City for National League rivals Halifax Town in January, having scored twice in 10 York games which included just two starts. At Halifax, he managed to start eight times in 12 appearances.
He recorded an assist on debut against Solihull Moors before netting maiden goal in the game after, against Ebbsfleet. Another goal against Southend United followed by an assist against Yeovil Town earlier this month means he sits on two goals and assists apiece so far.
