The Celtics are reportedly being sold to William Chisholm, according to Boston Globe reporter Adam Himmelsbach. The sale price is $6.1 billion, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Chisholm, the founder and managing director of Symphony Technology Group, is a longtime Celtics fan who grew up in Georgetown, Massachusetts.
Symphony Technology Group, which Chisholm leads, is a private equity firm founded in 2002.
Per Himmelsbach, longtime Celtics co-owner Wyc Grousbeck will stay on as a governor during the ownership transition period. Grousbeck bought the Boston-based NBA franchise with an investment group in 2002 for a sum of $360 million.
The 2025 deal, according to Charania, is set to be the most expensive sale of a North American sports team in history, eclipsing the previous record set in 2023 when a partnership led by Josh Harris acquired the Washington Commanders NFL franchise for $6.05 billion.

Grousbeck first revealed his family’s intention to sell its stake in the Celtics shortly after the team won the NBA championship in 2024.
“Boston Basketball Partners L.L.C., the ownership group of the Boston Celtics, announced today its intention to sell all the shares of the team,” the team said in a 2024 statement. “The controlling family of the ownership group, after considerable thought and internal discussion, has decided to sell the team for estate and family planning considerations.”
