**JACKSONVILLE** – If proving something is necessary, that's fine.
[Dyami Brown](/team/players-roster/dyami-brown/) signed with the Jaguars last week, and the team's newest starting wide receiver immediately made clear his mindset as he starts an important phase of an ascending career.
"A handout isn't something I'm looking for," he said.
Brown, who spent his first four NFL seasons with Washington, signed with the Jaguars as an unrestricted free agent last week. He signed a one-year contract that [General Manager James Gladstone](https://www.jaguars.com/team/front-office-roster/james-gladstone) put into perspective shortly thereafter.
> "He took a bet on himself that a year from now, given the opportunity that he sees here with the Jacksonville Jaguars, that he's going to take another step and earn an even larger contract," Gladstone said.
One-year contracts are often called "prove-it" deals in the NFL, with the player free after the season to sign with another team or re-sign with the organization. Former Jaguars tight end Evan Engram in 2022 parlayed a similar situation into a longer-term extension.
"You have to gamble on yourself," Brown said. "I'm supposed to gamble on somebody else? I'll take that bet."
**Brown added that he will bring to the Jaguars "a dog mentality."**
"I can go deep and all that stuff, but at the end of the day, I hold myself to a higher standard, so just bring the dog mentality in order to be great," he said.
_Brown, a third-round selection by Washington in the 2021 NFL Draft, has 59 career receptions for 784 yards and four touchdowns in four NFL seasons._
