Smerud: We’re improving every game – now we go again

Reflecting on the win, Smerud highlighted the mental strength shown by his players: “It impressed me a lot because high-pressure games like that are not easy.

"This team has had a tough season so far, coming from many bad experiences, especially at the end of games where they’ve lost points and victories.

"To ride the storm and perform under those conditions was very important. It was a demanding place to be, but the team handled it well, and of course, it brings a lot of energy.

"That’s been noticeable this week. Now, it’s about resetting and going again.”

Palace have had to adapt to the step up from the Championship this season, and finding the net has been a challenge at times.

However, having three different players on the scoresheet against Villa was a positive sign.

"I think there are goals in this team, and we proved that, We scored in different ways—set-pieces, counters—and we have players who can be dangerous in those moments.

"It’s about finding ways to use those strengths again against Everton,” Smerud said.

At this stage, Smerud is focused on performances rather than points targets.

He said: "I’m very focused on the process and the performance. Of course, we track some things in the numbers, but I’m more focused on what I see.

"Saying ‘fight’ is easy, but understanding how and where to do it is key. Our analysis helps show that we are improving, and that’s the most important thing.”
