In the US, health care is responsible for approximately 8.5% of carbon emissions, with hospitals contributing approximately 36% of all health care carbon emissions.1 Additionally, surgical care generates a substantial source of carbon emissions. Operating rooms use 3 to 6 times more energy per occupied space than the rest of the hospital and generate approximately one-third of hospital waste.2 Preoperative and postoperative tests, medications, and operating room supplies generate carbon emissions because they are manufactured, transported, and generate waste. Modifying surgical care could significantly improve environmental health by reducing carbon emissions through the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative stages.
