West Ham United will be glad Aaron Wan-Bissaka can be wrapped up ahead of the remainder of the season, but he will be gutted to miss out on the England squad.

Thomas Tuchel named his first Three Lions roster to take on Albania and Latvia during this week’s international break, though the still-uncapped Wan-Bissaka failed to make the cut.

The 27-year-old has performed excellently in an ailing West Ham side this season, improving on his previously limited attacking output, and is one of Graham Potter‘s key figures.

Wan-Bissaka ‘unlucky’ to be snubbed by Tuchel

TV commentator Ian Darke, speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, has credited Wan-Bissaka’s “career revival” after his move last summer from Manchester United.

Often criticised in the past for a lack of contribution in attack despite his defensive commendations, the right-back’s two goals in 30 games so far for the Hammers this season matched his goal tally in the 236 club appearances he had previously made during his senior career.

While Wan-Bissaka has previously been called up for England under Gareth Southgate, he has yet to earn a cap and will be knocking on the door if this season is anything to go by.

“It’s interesting with Wan-Bissaka, because the perception of him at Manchester United and Crystal Palace, to an extent, was that he was pretty good at the defensive side of the job,” Darke said.

“The criticism was that he wasn’t good enough going forward to play for a top club, but he’s looked good going forward for West Ham. They’ve worked on that, Potter will encourage him to get up the pitch, and his career revival is good news for them. He’s going to be in contention for their Player of the Year award.

“West Ham fans speak very well of him, and the move has suited him. He’s another player a tad unlucky not to be in the England squad – but he might well be soon.”

West Ham fans keep an eye on England

As the Tuchel era formally begins this week, even West Ham United fans from outside of England will be paying attention due to captain Jarrod Bowen’s continued inclusion in the squad.

Wan-Bissaka can consider himself unfortunate, with the heavy competition which has always existed at right-back for the Three Lions.

Tuchel has made some surprise selections in defence, which have stirred plenty of discourse, such as Kyle Walker, Dan Burn and Myles Lewis-Skelly, while midfielder Jordan Henderson has also returned to the fold.

Wan-Bissaka just needs to continue doing what he’s doing, and Tuchel will no doubt be feeling the same way – the omission is certainly no individual shade on the Irons ace.
