The Celtics know their new owner after a major move Thursday. The C’s ownership group has agreed to sell the team to William Chisholm, co-founder of Symphony Technology Group, in a record-breaking deal.
The Grousbeck family announced last July that the team was up for sale, just weeks after they won the 2024 NBA title. Wyc Grousbeck will continue his role as governor and CEO, overseeing team operations, through the 2027-28 season. That was the initial expectation when the team was announced for sale and will indeed be the case going forward. The Grousbeck family bought the Celtics for $360 million back in 2002.
“Bill is a terrific person and a true Celtics fan, born and raised here in the Boston area,” Grousbeck said in a statement. “His love for the team and the city of Boston, along with his chemistry with the rest of the Celtics leadership, make him a natural choice to be the next Governor and controlling owner of the team.
“I know he appreciates the importance of the Celtics and burns with a passion to win on the court while being totally committed to the community. Quite simply, he wants to be a great owner. He has asked me to run the team as CEO and Governor for the first three years, and stay on as his partner, and I am glad to do so.”
The deal still needs to be approved by the NBA’s Board of Governors. The Celtics sold for $6.1 billion, which is the most-ever by a North American sports franchise. The new ownership group will buy a majority of the team this summer. Current co-owner Rob Hale and Bruce A. Beal Jr. are part of the new group, along with Sixth Street, a global investment firm, among others.
