New Boston Celtics owner releases 1st public comments after sale

The Celtics are being sold to William Chisholm, co-founder of the Symphony Technology Group, in what will go down as a record-setting deal. The C’s sold for $6.1 billion, the largest-ever price tag in North American sports history.

The deal brings clarity for the Celtics as they’ve been up for sale for months now. Four bidders were revealed to be part of the final round with Chisholm coming out on top by the end of it. The Grousbeck family announced last July that the team was up for sale. Wyc Grousbeck will remain as team governor and CEO, overseeing team operations, through the 2027-28 season.

There are still a lot of moving parts going forward as the deal is pending approval from the NBA’s Board of Governors. Regardless, though, it’s a big day for the Celtics as they know their new ownership going forward. The ownership group includes current Celtics co-owner Rob Hale and Bruce A. Beal, Jr., along with other investment groups.

Chisholm released his first public comments as the newest Celtics owner Thursday:

“Growing up on the North Shore and attending college in New England, I have been a die-hard Celtics fan my entire life,” Chisholm said in a statement. “I understand how important the Celtics are to the city of Boston – the role the team plays in the community is different than any other city in the country. I also understand that there is a responsibility as a leader of the organization to the people of Boston, and I am up for this challenge.

“My partners and I have immense respect for Wyc, the entire Grousbeck family and their indelible contributions to the Celtics organization over the last 23 years. We look forward to learning from Wyc and partnering with Brad Stevens, Joe Mazzulla and the talented team and staff to build upon their success as we work to bring more championships home to Boston.”
