As recently as Thursday, there have been reports suggesting that Liverpool are more than willing to activate his £50 million release clause in order to bring the Spanish center-back to Anfield.
Sporting director Richard Hughes could play a pivotal role in bringing Huijsen to Anfield.
Though the defender’s signing was completed after Hughes left Bournemouth to join Liverpool, he was involved in the initial work to bring Huijsen from Juventus to the Vitality Stadium.
This existing relationship could give the Reds an advantage in negotiations.
But now, while answering questions in an Athletic Q&A session, David Ornstein poured a bit of cold water on all the reports linking the teenager to Liverpool.
“Richard Hughes and members of Liverpool’s recruitment team will know him particularly well given their links to Bournemouth, but I’m not sure if they’re pursuing him (I’ll need to make more checks) and you imagine there would need to be some outward movement in the Anfield centre-back department to create space for such a player,” he wrote.
“Also, is that position their top priority right now? Let’s see. I’m sure we’ll come back to the Huijsen topic in the weeks ahead!”
Huijsen has made a remarkable impact during his debut Premier League season after joining Bournemouth from Juventus for just £12.6 million last summer.
His value has since skyrocketed, with his release clause now standing at approximately £50 million.
Standing at an imposing 6’5”, the Spain international is described as an adaptable and technically excellent defender who excels at bringing the ball out of defence.
His ability to play with both feet makes him particularly attractive to Liverpool, as none of their current senior center-backs possess this attribute
