The dust is yet to settle on the fact Newcastle United ended 70 years of hurt on Sunday.
A brilliant performance saw Newcastle United win the Carabao Cup at Wembley, lifting their first major piece of domestic silverware since winning the FA Cup way back in 1955.
Newcastle beat Liverpool 2-1 at the national home of football, rewriting the history books. It was their first League Cup success in a 133-year history, proving that trophy droughts really do come to an end.
That appears to be something new England manager Thomas Tuchel is taking heart from. The German has been brought in on a short-team contract to try and win the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Asked why his attempts to finally add a second star to the famous Three Lions shirt will be different, Tuchel was keen to point out Newcastle’s success.

Thomas Tuchel explains why Newcastle United can help England win the World Cup
Much has been made about the fact the Football Association (FA) turned to a foreign manager rather than appointing an English coach.
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe was a target for the FA but stayed in his post at St James’ Park, although it remains unclear as to whether or not Tuchel was their first-choice either way.
Still, and while there is an argument that looking abroad hardly helps English coaching develop long-term to any meaningful degree, there are obvious benefits in appointing Tuchel.

The 51-year-old has managed the biggest clubs around, winning all manner of major trophies along the way. He’s also not burdened by the weight of the English national team’s history and can approach next summer’s campaign with a perhaps less emotional mindset.
Indeed, Tuchel thinks that the fact Newcastle performed so much better in their second Carabao Cup final in quick succession proves that England can turn the near-misses of the last few tournaments into the ultimate glory.
Speaking to ITV when asked why this time would be different, he said: “It was 70 years for Newcastle and it was different. And it was also different because they were in the second final. I strongly believe in this. It felt very different how they approached the second final in a short period of time and it will help us.”
The Newcastle United player Thomas Tuchel already loves
Three Newcastle players are in the England squad for their World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Latvia this month.
Dan Burn has joined Anthony Gordon and Tino Livramento in the ranks, while Lewis Hall was surely unlucky an injury ruined his chances.
Despite this being his first call-up, Tuchel values Burn’s versatility. Furthermore, Tuchel thinks Burn can bring leadership to the England squad, perhaps suggesting he’s set for a reasonably long-term stay in the camp.
It would be amazing to see the likes of Burn make the World Cup squad. He certainly has the big-game experience…
