Can 40-something quarterback Aaron Rodgers still be effective in today's NFL?

Most of the major moves of the 2025 NFL free agency period have already been made, but there is one big-name unattached star who appears in no rush to decide upon his next destination.

Four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers is available after the New York Jets declined to offer him a fresh contract. And the former Green Bay Packers icon is wanted by both the New York Giants and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Giants and Steelers desperately need a signal caller to tie together their offense, but Rodgers will turn 42 during the 2025 season and is believed to be contemplating a third option for his future plans – retirement.

If Rodgers does decide to lace up his cleats to return for what would be his 21st season in the NFL, just how effective can he be at such an advanced age?

Well, Rodgers produced a solid statistical campaign for the Jets last year, with 28 touchdowns and just 11 interceptions. And a glance back through NFL history suggests that, while rare, it is possible for quarterbacks to shine into their 40s.

Another former Packers and Jets great, Brett Favre, suited up past the 40-mark when he joined the Minnesota Vikings. The Super Bowl XXXI winner even turned back the clock to lead the Vikings to the NFC championship game as a 40-year-old in 2009.

Examples of other quarterbacks who remained productive into their 40s include the likes of Warren Moon, who made a Pro Bowl at age 41, and New Orleans Saints legend Drew Brees, who led the league in both passing accuracy and passer rating at age 40.

The greatest 40-plus quarterback, however, was also the greatest to ever do it at any age – Tom Brady.

Brady won a record seven Super Bowls during his illustrious career, including two after his 40th birthday.

In 2021, Brady became the oldest player of any position to win the NFL’s grandest prize when he fired the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to Super Bowl glory over the Kansas City Chiefs at age 43 years and 188 days.
