Harry Kane namechecks Dan Burn for shock England role as Thomas Tuchel drops selection hint

England captain Harry Kane has namechecked Newcastle United star Dan Burn when talking about a key role in the squad - despite the defender having yet to win a cap.

Burn was a surprise call-up to the Three Lions scene when Tuchel named his first squad. The Magpies man is part of a 24-man group preparing for World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Latvia

Tuchel had already outlined some of Burn's qualities and believes the 32-year-old has a lot to offer the group despite his international experience. However, Kane believes the Newcastle star is on a level with him, Jordan Henderson and Kyle Walker when it comes to leading the squad, despite the trio having more than 200 caps between them.

When asked about the squad's leadership group in the squad under Tuchel, the Bayern striker added: "We've had brief conversations with it but it hasn't been set. You've got me, Hendo (Jordan Henderson), Kyle (Walker) and then Dan Burn is seen as a leader. It hasn't been spoken about a lot."

Burn, whose man of the match performance on Sunday helped Newcastle win the Carabao Cup, is in contention to make his England bow on Friday night against Albania in a quick return to Wembley. And Tuchel has dropped a strong hint about how he wants the Three Lions to play, which seems to fit the physical style of the 6ft 7in defender.

Tuchel, whose side also play Latvia at Wembley on Monday, reiterated his side will be trying to replicate the qualities on show in the Premier League during their World Cup qualifying campaign. He said: "You can light up a stadium so easily in the Premier League with one tackle, with one header and everyone is suddenly on board, and this is what it is.

"We play for England, we are not Argentina and are not Spain. So we can adapt stuff that makes sense and should be open to that, but the DNA is clearly English and this means it's physical, it's tough and it's ready to fight."

Former Paris St Germain, Chelsea and Bayern Munich boss Tuchel said he felt England's players appeared tense during Euro 2020 on home soil and hopes they can approach big games without fear.

He added: "I've heard a lot that it's a heavy shirt. It is in fact not. But I know what the players mean. Watching the Euros I felt tension and pressure on the shoulders of the players and they were playing not to lose.

"I think we need to turn this around. We have so many experienced players, so many players who have won with clubs and I think we have every right to be self-confident."

Kane added: "Winning the World Cup is right up there at the top of the list but we have to qualify first. But, in general, to lift a trophy with England is always in the back of my mind. It would be a dream to able able to achieve that. It hurts when we've been so close and know we've been moments away from doing that, but it gives you more motivation to go one step further."
