Declan Rice laughs as Dan Burn mentions ‘cruellest thing ever’ from Thomas Tuchel's England call

Newcastle United defender Dan Burn has had an unforgettable few days.

Not only did Dan Burn score in Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup final win to end the club’s trophy drought, but he also received his first ever England call-up.

Burn went straight from Newcastle’s Wembley celebrations to the England camp, as he eyes up a Three Lions debut against either Albania or Latvia.

Tuchel has chosen Burn because of his versatility, but the giant defender thought it was a cruel prank when he first received a message from the England manager.

Dan Burn thought Thomas Tuchel text was a prank

Burn has sat down for a conversation with Arsenal players Declan Rice and Myles Lewis-Skelly for England’s official YouTube channel, with the man from Blyth detailing what happened when Tuchel first got in touch with him.

“We played West Ham on Monday night then on Tuesday night I got a text from the manager saying ‘it’s Thomas Tuchel, can I FaceTime later’,” he said.

“At first I was like ‘I’m getting pranked here’. I started going through my contact list seeing who I could text to see if this is legit.

“I was like ‘I’m just going to have to bite the bullet’. I’ll pick up FaceTime and be like [move away from the phone camera]. Then it actually was him.”

Rice replied: “Did you think it was Tripps or someone bantering you?”

Burn added: “Honestly, that is the cruellest thing ever.”

Dan Burn can keep making history after Newcastle United heroics

Tuchel’s text to Burn was no joke, and he went on to be selected in the German’s first Three Lions squad.

That will have been an incredibly proud moment for Burn at the age of 32, but the accomplishments did not end there.

Burn scored Newcastle’s first Wembley goal since Rob Lee in 2000, thundering home a header to give the Magpies the lead at Wembley. He played a key role in Newcastle ending their trophy drought, securing legendary status on Tyneside.

Next on the agenda will be an England debut. If he plays in either of England’s World Cup qualifiers, he will become the oldest player to make their Three Lions debut since Kevin Davies in October 2010.

If he makes his debut, Burn can then possibly look towards being involved at the 2026 World Cup.

That would be an incredible achievement, with Tuchel tasked with bringing football home after Gareth Southgate fell short.
