The midfielder is set to leave his current club in the summer amid heavy Premier League interest.

Manchester United could decide to look at the free agent market in order to make some summer signings due to their precarious position regarding Profit and Sustainability Rules.

The Red Devils could be forced to sell the likes of Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo to make ‘pure profit’ if they want to fund some expensive summer transfer moves. As academy players, all the money from potential sales would all be accounting for when looking at PSR.

While United need to sell to buy this summer, they could opt to look out for bargain deals with potential free agents, one of which they have already been linked to ahead of the summer transfer window.

Angel Gomes in talks with Spurs after West Ham offer

One of the players set to be a free agent in the summer is Lille FC midfielder Angel Gomes, who was an academy graduate from Manchester United. The Red Devils have been linked to bringing him back to Old Trafford, as his contract is set to expire in Lille at the end of the season. However, they aren’t the only Premier League club to be keen on the England international.

Last week, Football Transfers reported Tottenham are eager to land the 24-year-old, and they have reportedly opened talks to strike a deal for Gomes to move to North London in the summer.

Now a fresh report has emerged from the Guardian that West Ham offered Gomes a huge £100,000 per week contract, which was reportedly rejected by Gomes as it isn’t enough to tempt the midfielder to the London Stadium. It is likely that he will want to play European football next season, or for a team that can increase his chances of becoming a regular in Thomas Tuchel’s England side.

Gomes received his first, and so far, only call up to the Three Lions, when Lee Carsley picked him whilst in interim charge in the Autumn. The 24-year-old has made 20 appearances for Lille this season, scoring two goals and providing an assist. As Spurs and West Ham try to land him, it is also understood that United are monitoring his situation, and are keen to bring him back to Old Trafford.

United also linked to Gomes’ teammate

Gomes isn’t the only big-name Lille player that is due to become a free agent in the summer as star striker Jonathan David is also running out of contract.

The Canadian has attracted a lot of Premier League interest from the likes of United, West Ham and Arsenal amongst others, and for United would provide another PSR-friendly summer signing.

David has scored 23 goals in 41 games for Lille this season and remains one of the most prolific goal-scorers in Europe. He would be a much cheaper alternative for United to the likes of Viktor Gyokeres and Victor Osimhen, who have both been linked to Old Trafford.

For your next United read, the Red Devils have added a Chelsea-linked striker to their summer shortlist.
