The purchase of the Boston Celtics Wednesday afternoon by Bill Chisholm of Symphony Technology group, shattered a record set by the Washington Commanders ownership group for the largest price paid for an American sports franchise.
Chisolm and his group have agreed to pay a minimum of $6.1 billion for the purchase of the Celtics from the Grousbeck family.
The Commanders ownership group, anchored by Josh Harris agreed to pay $6.05 billion, which was then a record sum for a North American sports franchise.
Commanders' former owner Daniel Snyder had owned the majority of the Commanders since 1999, and his family became the sole owners after he bought out his limited partners years ago.
Harris said at the time of the purchase, he felt "humbled and awed" to be the new owner.
"I feel an awesome responsibility to the city of Washington," Harris said when the winning bid was announced. "I know what I've got to do. It comes down to winning. It's on me and on our ownership group to deliver. That's what we're going to do."
The Harris group is paying $6.05 billion, a record sum for a North American sports franchise. Snyder had owned the majority of the Commanders since 1999, and his family became the sole owners after he bought out his limited partners two years ago.
Chisholm issued a statement through his media department on Wednesday echoing Harris' sentiments from when his group took over the Commanders.

"Growing up on the North Shore and attending college in New England, I have been a die-hard Celtics fan my entire life," Chisholm said in a statement. "I understand how important the Celtics are to the city of Boston - the role the team plays in the community is different than any other city in the country.
"I also understand that there is a responsibility as a leader of the organization to the people of Boston, and I am up for this challenge."
