Arsenal will be sweating over the fitness of Riccardo Calafiori after the defender was forced off with an injury in the closing stages of Italy's loss to Germany on Thursday night.

The centre-back attempted to quickly change direction during injury time and slipped on the turf as his left knee buckled underneath him.

Calafiori received treatment on the pitch, and was able to get back to his feet but told the medical team that he could not continue playing.

Speaking after the game, Azzurri head coach Luciano Spalletti said of Calafiori: “He said that his knee feels strange, but cannot answer more precisely than that, so we’ll have to see."

Calafiori was seen limping when leaving the San Siro, and when asked how his knee was, he replied: “I still don’t know.”

The 22-uear-old will continue to be assessed by medical staff ahead of Italy's Nations League quarter-final second leg on Sunday.

Calafiori has already seen his debut season with Arsenal disrupted by four separate injuries, which has seen him sit out 16 games for club and country since last summer.
