Trade, Industry and Energy Minister Ahn Duk-geun said that he will make utmost efforts to remove South Korea from the U.S.’ list of “sensitive country” list during his U.S. trip, and if that is not possible, he will seek a “constructive alternative.” The minister made the remarks to reporters on Thursday upon arrival at Dulles International Airport near Washington D.C. for a two-day trip to the U.S. Ahn said that he will explore the best possible measures to ensure that science, technology and industrial cooperation between South Korea and the United States will not be hindered. As for U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan to roll out reciprocal tariffs on April 2, the minister said that there are virtually no tariffs between South Korea and the U.S. under a bilateral free trade agreement, but there are some nontariff issues being raised, so efforts are underway to swiftly address the issues domestically.
Ahn is scheduled to meet with U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright on Thursday afternoon and U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick on Friday.
