Matildas Abroad Preview: City and Chelsea meet again in WSL; Damallsvenskan season gets underway

Manchester City and Chelsea will meet for the third time in a row for their all-important WSL clash this weekend, with City needing to win to give any side hope of catching Chelsea at the top of the table.

Meanwhile, the Swedish league season gets underway, while Jamilla Rankin's TSG Hoffenheim take on Bayern Munich in a cup semi-final.

England

Women’s Super League

Everton host Crystal Palace on Sunday, 1am AEDT. After Palace’s win last week, the game takes on extra meaning as another three points here could catapult them out of the relegation zone. Everton will be hoping for the win themselves to avoid being dragged into a relegation battle. Clare Wheeler will be available for the Toffees.

Arsenal take on Liverpool on Sunday, 4.30am AEDT. The game is an opportunity for Arsenal to enact some revenge after Liverpool knocked them out of the FA Cup, but it won’t be easy backing up after a disappointing UWCL trip to Real Madrid. Caitlin Foord, Kyra Cooney-Cross and Steph Catley will be available for the Gunners, while Teagan Micah could line up in goals for Liverpool.

West Ham and Tottenham Hotspur face off on Sunday, 11pm AEDT. Both teams are hoping to find ways to escape the lower-mid-table pack and finish the season on a high. Katrina Gorry will be available for the Hammers while Clare Hunt, Charli Grant and Hayley Raso will all be available for Spurs.

Manchester City and Chelsea meet each other for the third time in a row – with the second leg of their UWCL tie looming as the fourth – on Monday, 1.30am AEDT. At the moment honours lie one apiece as Chelsea lifted the League Cup trophy, but City took a two-goal advantage from the first leg of the UWCL quarter-final. Mary Fowler will be available for City while Sam Kerr remains unavailable for Chelsea.

Leicester City take on Brighton & Hove Albion on Monday, 2am AEDT. Brighton secured a vital victory last week and will be hoping to take that form into a late push for the top four, while the Foxes will be focused on any points they can get – they are now only three points away from the relegation zone. Courtney Nevin will be available for Leicester.

The final game of the round is Aston Villa facing Manchester United on Monday, 3.30am AEDT. Villa are the team in most danger of being caught by Crystal Palace, but it would take a massive upset for them to get anything out of this game.

Women’s Championship

Birmingham City travel to take on Charlton on Monday, 1am AEDT in what could be a decisive match in the title race. Charlton are currently in third, six points below Birmingham who are in first, and will likely require victory to have any chance of challenging Birmingham and London City in second. A win for Birmingham will keep their noses in front at the top for another week. Emily van Egmond will be available for Birmingham.

United States

Portland Thorns take on Angel City FC on Saturday, 1pm AEDT. Both teams are searching for their first win of the season after an up-and-down first round. Mackenzie Arnold and Kaitlyn Torpey will be available for Portland, while Alanna Kennedy is set to reprise her role in the centre of midfield for Angel City.

North Carolina Courage host Seattle Reign on Sunday, 10am AEDT. Both teams will be looking to build on the draws they started the season with. Cortnee Vine will be available for the Courage after coming off the bench last week.

France

Lyon take on Saint-Étienne on Sunday, 7am AEDT. They’ll be hoping to maintain their undefeated league season while also maintaining fresh legs for the second leg of their UWCL tie next week. Ellie Carpenter will be available for Lyon.

Sweden

The 2025 Damallsvenkan season gets underway this weekend, with all eyes on FC Rosengård after their extraordinary league title in 2024.

DFF Kristianstads start their campaign with an away trip to Djurgården on Monday, 1am AEDT. Kristianstads have consistently been a team that is there or thereabouts in regards to European football but will be hoping to take the next step this season. Remy Siemsen is in fantastic goal-scoring form and is expected to start, while Amy Sayer continues her recovery from her ACL injury.

AIK Fotboll take on Linköping on Sunday, 1am AEDT. AIK narrowly avoided relegation last season and their goal will be to secure as many points as they can early in the season to lift themselves out of the relegation battle. Jada Whyman has been battling an injury and is not expected to be available for this game.

Denmark

FC Nordsjælland take on Aarhus on Sunday, 1am AEDT. Every game is vital for the defending champions as they attempt to reel in Fortuna Hjørring, who currently sit four points above them on the table. Winonah Heatley will be available for Nordsjælland.

Netherlands

FC Twente host Heerenveen in the league on Sunday, 10.15pm AEDT. Twente have been in fantastic form of late, racking up four straight victories, and will be favourites to make it five against the team currently seventh on the table. A win keeps the pressure on Ajax at the top who are two points above them as it stands. Daniela Galic will be available for Twente.

Germany

TSG Hoffenheim take on Bayern Munich in the DFB Pokal Women semi-final on Sunday, 12am AEDT. The Cup is Hoffenheim’s best chance of a trophy this season and they will be hoping to take advantage of some potential fatigue in Bayern Munich’s ranks after their midweek UWCL tie. Jamilla Rankin will be available for Hoffenheim.
