Manchester United arranged multiple sales and shifted deadwood in the squad last summer.

There were a total of 14 permanent sales in the summer transfer window, including a few high-profile departures, such as Scott McTominay, Raphael Varane and Mason Greenwood.

There were also exits for academy graduates who progressed to the cusp of the first team, and this article will look at where they are now and give a brief summary of how they're doing.

So without further ado, here are the players who left United on permanent deals last summer...

Alvaro Fernandez - Benfica

United have until the 2026 summer window to activate their Alvaro Fernandez buy-back option on and many supporters wanted that option to be triggered in the last January window.

Fernandez continued at Benfica instead and he's established himself in the senior game since moving to Portugal, delivering a string of impressive performances in the Primeira Liga.

The right-back has made 41 appearances for Benfica and started in every Champions League game up until Barcelona knocked Benfica out of the competition earlier this month.

Will Fish - Cardiff City

Will Fish's spell at Hibernian was the most successful loan that United arranged last season and he left for Championship club Cardiff City because he wanted consistent first-team minutes.

Cardiff are fighting for survival in the second-tier and Fish has forced his way into the starting team in the last few months, which has coincided with the Bluebirds securing positive results.

Omari Forson - Monza

Omari Forson's name hasn't been forgotten in Manchester, mostly because he is remembered as the player who was given minutes by Erik ten Hag, who somehow preferred him to Amad.

Amad has proven his quality in the last 12 months and Forson has struggled in Italy. The youngster has made just one start for Monza, who are rock bottom of Serie A, and he's spent the majority of his time on their bench as they inch closer to relegation to Italy's second division.

Mason Greenwood - Marseille

Mason Greenwood made a strong start to life in France. He has netted 15 goals in Ligue 1, but there have been reports of a fallout with former Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi.

Greenwood has been dropped for Marseille's last two matches and De Zerbi has reportedly criticised his training commitment, which suggests that it might not all be rosy.

Hannibal - Burnley

Hannibal enjoyed a breakthrough into the first team with Ten Hag in charge, but he couldn't retain a place in the starting team, so he joined Championship promotion hopefuls Burnley.

The 22-year-old has made 31 appearances in all competitions this season and has contributed three assists, although his yellow card tally of six is double that. Hannibal is synonymous with tough tackles and catching the attention of the referee, despite only playing a few seasons of senior football.

Charlie McNeill - Sheffield Wednesday

Charlie McNeill had to carry the weight of his remarkable goalscoring record as a young teen when he progressed through the academy, as it had been overplayed in the media.

It was always unrealistic to expect him to score 30 goals per season for the rest of his career, although he will be disappointed with how his move to Sheffield Wednesday has unfolded because he's made just five appearances for the Owls and has been absent from their squads since December.

Maxi Oyedele - Legia Warsaw

Maxi Oyedele completed a permanent transfer to Legia Warsaw last summer and United allowed him to leave for a small initial fee, which included a substantial future sell-on clause.

Oyedele has made a strong start to his time with Legia Warsaw, who are fifth in the Polish top-flight, and was rewarded with a first call-up to Poland's senior national side in October.

Facundo Pellistri - Panathinaikos

Facundo Pellistri recently picked up a hamstring injury, and that represented the first disappointment for the winger since his relocation to Greece, where he plays for Panathinaikos.

Although Pellistri was below the level required to make regular starts at Old Trafford, he's established himself at Panathinaikos and has played European football in the Conference League.

Willy Kambwala - Villarreal

Willy Kambwala suffered various injuries during his time in United's academy, but he managed to overcome those issues to make a first-team debut and feature in 10 games for United.

United struck while the iron was hot and sold Kambwala to Villarreal last summer. The Spaniards made an offer for Kambwala of €5.5m plus €6m in add-ons that simply couldn't be refused and the young centre-back has struggled with his fitness again since moving to La Liga.

Shola Shoretire - PAOK

Shola Shoretire has settled nicely into life at PAOK, who are looking to defend their Greek title. Shoretire remains the youngest player to ever represent United in European competition and he spoke to reporters at a press conference at Old Trafford when POAK visited in November.

Donny van de Beek - Girona

Donny van de Beek is finally enjoying his football again with Girona. The Dutchman has made 31 appearances for the Spanish side this season and scored in the Champions League in October.

Raphael Varane - Como

Raphael Varane signed an initial two-year deal with Como, but he suffered a serious knee injury just 23 minutes into his debut against Sampdoria in the Coppa Italia.

The defender subsequently announced his retirement aged 31 and took a position in Como's boardroom.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka - West Ham

Aaron Wan-Bissaka was given an eight-year contract at the London Stadium and he's been a key player for West Ham since his arrival. The defender has made 27 starts in the Premier League, and some have called for him to be included in his first England squad since 2019.

Scott McTominay - Napoli

Scott McTominay has been a huge success story in Naples. He has thrived working under the fiery Antonio Conte, and has contributed seven goals and four assists in all competitions.

Napoli are sat the top of Serie A for most of the campaign, but they are now three points behind Inter Milan and will be hoping to return to the summit to claim the league title.
