Chiefs Re-Sign Defensive End to 1-Year Deal

Charles Omenihu thought his days as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs were over. His contract expired and he did not receive an offer to come back. On the other hand, he did not receive any offers from any other teams either.

That was until Thursday.

The Chiefs did an about face and offered Omenihu a one-year deal worth up to $7 million.

The deal was first announced by ESPN's Adam Schefter on social media.

There was a thought the Detroit Lions were going to sign him once free agency started. He was going to fill the spot which opened up when Za'Darius Smith left in free agency.

The Lions thought he would pair well with Aidan Hutchinson who is working his way back from a season-ending knee injury suffered last season.

It was said the Lions could not get past Omenihu's injuries and off the field issues. In 2023 he served a six-game suspension for disciplinary issues. He also suffered an ACL team during the playoffs that season which caused him to miss most of the 2024 season.

During his limited reps in 2024 he had one sack and 12 quarterback pressures. He only saw the field for 154 defensive repetitions. He was a better player than that and Andy Reid is gambling on the fact he is going to see the pre-2023 player the Chiefs were extremely fond of.

Omenihu, 27, is a former fifth-round pick of the Houston Texans in 2019. He was in the third year of his four-year, $2,815,280 rookie contract when he was traded to the 49ers for a late-round pick.
