Chelsea star Marc Cucurella has openly shared the one thing he’s desperate to improve.
In Chelsea’s squad this season, Marc Cucurella has definitely been one of the standout performers.
The 26-year-old left-back has really come into his own during his third campaign at Stamford Bridge, proving why the Blues paid £60m to sign him from Brighton. Not only is he defensively very impressive this year, but he’s also chipping in as an attacking threat.

Marc Cucurella in the 2024/25 season for Chelsea
Jason Cundy recently praised Cucurella by claiming that the defender has been as good as teammate Cole Palmer for Chelsea over the course of the season. While others have dipped in form during 2025, he continues to be a consistent player at full-back.

Marc Cucurella claims he must become a more vocal leader
Even though Cucurella is currently away on international duty with Spain, he’s been discussing his role at Chelsea during an in-depth interview. Interestingly, he shared that people at the club always tell him to express himself louder as a leader within the group because he’s got the personality and skillset.
“I know I’m a leader because I’m a hard worker. I try to give my all, and people respect me in that regard. But then when it comes to giving talks, I don’t know how to express it,” Cucurella told Relevo.
“There at Chelsea, they really give me a hard time. We have a kind of coach who tells me that, which I don’t know if I know, but that I’m a great leader. That my teammates respect me a lot, that I should do more. Give more talks.
“I think I’m a leader, but in a different way. Not by giving talks or anything like that, but by giving it my all. With my work, with what I contribute. I’m a leader in that regard. But then when it comes to speaking and such, the truth is that I struggle a bit.

“I feel sorry because many times, for example, I’m at home and I say, ‘Oh, well, look, I could tell them this. I think it would be good, it would help them.’ But then when it comes down to it, I can’t do it. I have to improve on that.”
Danny Murphy thinks Cucurella is settled after a nervous start to his Chelsea career. Unlike a couple of seasons ago, he’s now a reliable figure in the dressing room and someone that supporters can bank on for consistent displays.
It’s going to be interesting to watch him try grow into a leader as he enters what should be the prime years of his career.

The leadership group at Chelsea
The eye test tells you that Chelsea desperately need more leaders and experience within the group to help the many youngsters. Hopefully, one or two senior professionals join in the summer to mentor this young squad.
In the meantime, it’s interesting to note who already plays a leadership role at Chelsea.
Chelsea’s leadership group this season consists of Reece James, Enzo Fernandez, Mosies Caicedo, Levi Colwill, Tosin Adarabioyo and Marcus Bettinelli.
When we look around the Blues dressing room, Cucurella is definitely someone we do see setting the example with his displays on the pitch. Even if he struggles vocalising it, he’ll raise others around him with his standards and desire.
We wouldn’t be against the Spaniard emerging as more of a leader at Stamford Bridge.
