Emiliano Buendia gives huge transfer update amid Leeds United links - 'The truth is'

Emiliano Buendia has given an important update on his future amid recent reports linking him strongly linked with a move to Leeds United.

The Argentine, on loan at Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen from Aston Villa, is in the transfer headlines once again. The attacker was reportedly a target for The Whites last summer and during the recent winter transfer window, but he opted for a move abroad.

Nevertheless, a summer reunion with Daniel Farke could be tempting - especially if the German can guide his team back to the Premier League. The Leeds boss was the man who brought Buendia to English football when he signed him for Norwich City from Getafe in 2018.

It's safe to say the Argentinian flourished under his leadership, with the best season of his career statistically taking place in Norfolk. In the 2020/21 Sky Bet Championship season, Buendia netted 15 times and provided 16 assists in 39 appearances.

But with his career since having been plagued with injuries and the subsequent inconsistency that often comes afterwards, the 28-year-old went to reigning Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen on loan in January hoping to kick on. It hasn't quite gone to plan, which has led to links with a move back to him home country.

The playmaker has recently been linked with a move back home to Argentine side River Plate, and has now spoken about the transfer rumours in an interview with ESPN Deportes. Leaving the door open for a potential move to Elland Road, Buendia said: "Right now, the truth is I don’t see it [a move to River Plate] happening. I’m not thinking about it because I hope I have many years left in Europe, which I’m really enjoying.

"We’ll see in the future. Obviously, for me, River Plate is the most beautiful club in the world, and I’m a fan of it, and we’ll see what happens."

Before he made the temporary switch to Germany, Buendia signed a contract extension at Villa Park. This extended his deal to the summer of 2027.
