Liverpool’s contract negotiations with Mohamed Salah remain unresolved, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.
However, despite the lack of official progress, the club remains confident that an agreement can be reached with their star forward.
Salah, whose current deal expires at the end of the season, is one of three key players facing an uncertain future at Anfield, alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk.
While van Dijk appears the most likely to renew, concerns persist over Salah’s long-term commitment, particularly with lucrative offers from Saudi Arabia and European giants potentially on the horizon.
Liverpool and Salah yet to find common ground
During a recent Q&A session, Ornstein revealed that there has been no major breakthrough in talks between Salah and Liverpool.
While this doesn’t necessarily mean discussions have stalled, it does suggest that an agreement is not imminent.
“Not that I’m personally aware of,” Ornstein responded when asked about updates. “Which doesn’t mean there aren’t any, it may just be that it hasn’t come to the media/public attention yet.
“I just know Liverpool have been optimistic for some time that they will reach an agreement because, ultimately, they want Salah to stay and there is a belief that he is happy and would like the same.”
Liverpool’s optimism, however, is tempered by the financial aspect of the deal.
At 32, Salah is likely seeking a longer contract than the club may be willing to offer.
No indications of external bids, but uncertainty remains
Despite speculation linking Salah to PSG and the Saudi Pro League, Ornstein noted that any reports suggesting an imminent departure have been swiftly denied by those involved.
“Furthermore, when you make checks on rumours/reports/suggestions that Salah might be set for a move to the Saudi Pro League or PSG, for example, you tend to receive pretty immediate and firm denials.”
Additionally, Ornstein dismissed any suggestion that Liverpool’s recent Champions League and Carabao Cup exits would impact contract negotiations.
When asked about van Dijk, Ornstein replied: “All parties playing down van Dijk to PSG… Liverpool remain confident that he will extend at Anfield.”
What next for Salah and Liverpool?
Liverpool’s position remains clear – they want Salah to stay.
And for now, there’s no definitive indication that the player himself is seeking an exit. However, until an agreement is finalised, speculation will continue, and the longer negotiations drag on, the more uncertainty grows around the Egyptian’s future.
With Liverpool preparing for a busy summer transfer window, securing Salah’s signature on a new deal would be a major statement of intent. But as things stand, the saga is far from over.
