Commission hails “key step in advancing Europe’s technological leadership and sustainability”
The European Commission has set up EU public-private research and innovation partnerships on advanced materials, textiles and photovoltaics, describing the move as “a key step in advancing Europe’s technological leadership and sustainability goals”.
Created under the EU’s R&I programme, Horizon Europe, the partnerships are expected to drive growth, sustainability and resilience, the Commission said on 20 March.
R&I commissioner Ekaterina Zaharieva said: “By uniting research and industry, we accelerate innovation, drive smarter investments and bridge gaps in Europe’s R&I landscape.”
Three now, one later
Photovoltaics are the technologies used in solar panels. This partnership is intended to scale up manufacturing and strengthen supply chains, with EU and private investments of up to €240 million each from 2025 to 2030.
The textiles partnership is expected to “drive the transformation of the textile industry towards sustainability and circularity”, with EU and private investments of up to €30m each over 2025-30.
Finally, the EU and industry will each put up to €250m into the advanced materials partnership by 2030. This initiative aims to speed up the development and use of safe and sustainable materials and technologies related to the circular economy.
In addition, another partnership on virtual technologies will launch later this year, the Commission said.
