Mikel Arteta handed new major Arsenal injury scare after double Liverpool blow

A number of Arsenal stars were in action for their respective nations on Thursday evening with William Saliba and Mikel Merino among those enjoying mixed outings. Though the latter played just six minutes, he scored a decisive goal for Spain all while Saliba was powerless to prevent France from losing 2-0 to Croatia.

Oleksandr Zinchenko, Kieran Tierney and Riccardo Calafiori were a few others that also took to the pitch. The former grabbed an assist and played the full 90 minutes of Ukraine's 3-1 win over Belgium while Tierney came on for the final 15 minutes to help Scotland see out a narrow triumph over Greece.

As for Calafiori, he played in an Italy back three as they lost 2-1 to Germany in the first leg of their Nations League qualification match. Though he finished the game, Calafiori required some treatment in the late stages after slipping off the ball which saw him grab his left knee promptly.

After the game, Italy head coach Luciano Spalletti was able to provide an update from the limited information he knew. "We still don't know if he's injured," he told reporters. "Ricky feels something strange at his knee but we still don't know." Calafiori was later spotted limping as he left the stadium.

The 22-year-old has suffered several minor issues since joining the Gunners but this could be a potentially major one given the awkward landing where a lot of pressure was forced onto his knee. Jurrien Timber was another Arsenal player in line to feature on Thursday, but illness prevented him from playing against Spain for the Netherlands.

Ronald Koeman had already lost Liverpool's Ryan Gravenberch to injury and will therefore be hoping Timber can be ready for the next game with Spain in just a few days. In addition to Arne Slot's Gravenberch blow, Ibrahima Konate was replaced by Dayot Upamecano at half time of the France game after picking up a knock.

Elsewhere on the injury front for Arsenal, Bukayo Saka will likely be using this time to work hard on his recovery at London Colney.

The Gunners talisman has missed the last three months because of a hamstring injury, but a return in April is being targeted. Ahead of their Champions League quarter-final tie against Real Madrid, Arsenal face Fulham and Everton in Premier League action where potential cameos could occur.
