Ipswich Town forward Julio Enciso helped Paraguay earn a 1-0 win against Chile in World Cup qualifying.

In South America, all 10 counties are put into one big league table, where the top six automatically progress to next summer’s World Cup while the seventh-place team earns a play-off spot.

Paraguay’s impressive form has saw them reach 17 points before hosting Chile in Asuncion last night, so a victory would put them even closer to qualification.

Enciso, who is spending the season on loan at Portman Road from Brighton, started up front alongside Torino’s Antonio Sanabria, earning his 24th senior cap at the age of 21.

His opportunities were limited, with La Albirroja struggling for possession, but they did take the lead on the hour-mark as Omar Alderete headed home following a scramble from a free-kick.

Paraguay were able to see out the win, leaving them fourth in the table with 20 points from five wins, five draws and three defeats in their qualifying campaign.

They are now unbeaten in seven games going into Wednesday’s away game against Colombia (midnight GMT).
