Thomas Tuchel axes Liverpool star from England squad and makes Gibbs-White call

Thomas Tuchel has been forced to axed three players from his England squad.

The new England boss named a 26-man squad in his first international break in charge, but UEFA rules mean only 23 players can be selected per fixture.

Meaning Tuchel has decided to cut Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White, Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah and Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

The German officially took over as England boss at the turn of the year and set about getting the Three Lions in shape to begin their World Cup qualifying campaign at home against Albania on Friday.

Tuchel sparked angry reactions to his first England squad, particularly with his decision to recall Jordan Henderson and initially overlook Gibbs-White. However, following Cole Palmer’s withdrawal from the squad, the Forest star was announced as a late call-up.

Morgan Gibbs-White

Morgan Gibbs-White has been left out of England's squad to play Albania

But Gibbs-White doesn’t appear to have impressed Tuchel, with the midfielder omitted from the matchday squad to face Albania despite being one of the key driving forces behind Forest’s remarkable season.

Meanwhile, Ramsdale misses out in place of Burnley stopper James Trafford with the Southampton man the one goalkeeper to be excluded. And Quansah has been ditched with eight defenders named in the squad.

Tuchel stated that England did not have a clear playing style at the Euros last summer and were “afraid of losing” under Gareth Southgate, something he is setting out to change.

He told ITV: "The identity, the clarity, the rhythm, the repetition of patterns. The freedom of players, the expression of players, the hunger. They were more afraid to drop out of the tournament, in my observation, than having the excitement and hunger to win it."

Tuchel added on the demands he has put on the team: "Excitement. That people feel that's the team to beat. That we arrive with a group to beat. That we know already, once we've qualified, once we arrive that this is the team to beat."
